The Secure DigitalTM (SD) memory cards are popular storage devices that see application in a wide
range of modern consumer electronic devices. This Application Note details their interface with
the ADSP-BF52x Blackfin processors.

SD cards support two modes of operation a serial mode that is compatible to the Serial Peripheral
Interface (SPI), and a parallel mode, more commonly referred to as the SD mode. The SPI mode is
advantageous in that the cards can be interfaced seamlessly with many controllers or Digital Signal
Processors which have on-chip support for SPI; but supports a limited set of features of the card.
The SD mode on the other hand needs to have a dedicated controller, or a complex interface; but
supports the complete feature set of these cards. This Application Note implements the serial mode
through the SPI port of Blackfin, and the parallel mode through different approaches, two of them on
Blackfin Parallel Peripheral Interface (PPI) and one on Blackfin Asynchronous Memory Interface (AMI).
